  • I am hearing strange noises when I drive my car. What do I do?

Your car is always giving you feedback, so you may hear a number of noises. Here are a few reasons why your car may be making unusual noises.

    1. A humming noise when accelerating - While you are driving, you may hear a low-pitched hum, like an airplane taking off. After a certain speed, the volume is consistent. When you make a turn, the noise gets louder, but if you turn the other way, it disappears.

This could be a wheel-bearing noise. It’s often mistaken as engine noise. One way you can tell if this is the issue is to watch your RPM gauge. As you accelerate, the RPM and speed gauges rise. Coast at a set speed, take your foot off the gas pedal, and watch the RPM gauge drop. If the noise is still there, it’s definitely not coming from the engine.

    2. Droning noise - This is when a droning noise gets louder as you accelerate. The noise could be coming from your tires, especially if they are old or of low quality. It could be a sign that the tread on your tires is wearing unevenly. If this is happening, it also could be a sign of a worn suspension component, which cause the tires to hop up and down as you drive rather than rolling smoothly down the road.

    3. High-pitched squealing - If you are hearing a high-pitched squeal that sounds like a bird chirping when starting the engine, it could mean that your car’s serpentine belt is worn or cracked. If this noise is heard only when turning on the air conditioning, you’ll know there is an issue with the belt. It may need to be replaced or adjusted.

If you're experiencing any of these issues, give us a call today! We're proud to offer the reliable auto repair Roseburg, OR depends on.
